I used to run with both my phone (I used a couple different apps, like mapmyrun and runkeeper) and my Garmin, and the phone running apps always overestimated my runs compared to Garmin. My Garmin tends to be close (but again, slightly overestimates) to certified course measurements, so I trust it more than the phone apps.
